MEN’S BASKETBALL
Late bucket sinks CSS
Raheem Anthony’s layup with :04 to play proved decisive as St. Mary’s edged St. Scholastica 68-66 in MIAC men’s basketball on Saturday at Reif Gymnasium.
The Saints led 41-30 at halftime, but a lead that briefly climbed to 14 was wiped out before the midway point of the half as St. Mary’s scored 24 points in the first 8:50 and led by as many as nine. The teams went possession for possession down the stretch, with free throws from Jack Silgen and Cade Goggleye evening the game at 66 before the Cardinals executed on their last possession, going to Anthony to complete a career game of 35 points. CSS was not credited with getting a shot off before the buzzer.
Anthony, who also had 10 rebounds for a double-double, had a majority of St. Mary’s points and was his team’s only scorer in double figures.
For the Saints (1-4, 0-3 MIAC), Quinn Fischer scored 21 points on 8-of-11 from the field. Silgen added 10 points and 10 rebounds. CSS shot 57.7 percent (15-for-26) from the field in the first half, but just 28 percent (7-for-25) in the second.
